Does setting employee variable to nil deallocate the array?

At the top of page 123, it reads "When employees is set to nil, the array no longer has an owner. So it is deallocated…"
Does that apply to IOS? (It sounds more like a garbage collection description.)
For IOS, it seems that setting employees to nil would result in an object remaining in memory with no way to reach it, i.e., a leak.

Both iOS and OS X have ARC, so in both cases, the object which has no owner should be automatically deallocated.
