After spending a week getting the simple app to actually build and run correctly, I realized that the kindle view screen needs to be expanded all the way to view the code correctly. My Xcode actually shows up in color and those cues in the book would improve clarity for neophytes like me. The “instancetype” can also be replaced with “id” and it wasn’t until I found the resources download that these nuances were clear.
I found it helps to set the text display to a single wide column and reduce the font size a bit.
I could not get the thing to run until I figured out it was supposed to be id.

This is not correct. instancetype works just fine. Can you tell me what error you are getting? Did you try to copy and paste from the digital materials, or did you type in instancetype?
instancetype is correct and is the preferred approach. I’ve confirmed that it works, so if you could give me more details, I’d be glad to look into it further.
