Why would (cell == nil) not be true

Experimenting with another app and a table view. It uses the storyboard and prototype cells.

Inside the cellForRowAtIndexPath method, using:

static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"MasterCell";
cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier];

The following doesn’t get executed:

if (cell == nil) {
    NSLog(@"Found an empty cell");
}

What am I missing in understanding reusable cells?
