Is there a place where possible solutions are provided for challenges?
If they’re not posted here (since this version of the book is still pretty new) you can check the previous editions to see if the challenges were the same, and if anyone has posted their solutions. At the top left you should see a spot where it says “Android Programming (3rd Edition)” or something like that. When you click on it, you can go to the different forums including the 2nd edition or 1st edition of the book.
Thanks, I’ll have a look!

hi, your solution is close. But you don’t need this static fields:
private static final int LIST_ITEM_CRIME = 0;
private static final int LIST_ITEM_CRIME_POLICE = 1;
You can use R.layout.list_item_crime (and list_item_crime_police) and pass them around.

Thanks @hosuwisp,
That works as well. I was following the book’s convention when I worked on the solution
Thanks @asett, I guess your solution is the right one since getItemViewType should return a type and not an id. Also it felt wrong to set up a listener based on an if statement, and putting it in the bind is probably the wrong spot too?

Ok, I’ve had another go at this.
This solution does what the challenge says to do - as per @asett I think it is a bit neater than the solution from @asett though since it has less if statements and there isn’t strange casting going on in onBindViewHolder.

My solution looks like this
I’v added a 2nd layout list_item_crime_police.xml with an extra button
<Button
android:id="@+id/contact_police"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text=“CONTACT POLICE!” />
I’ve added the mRequiresPolice member to the Crime class (and i’ve set every thirth one to true)
in the CrimeListFragment, i’ve added (or changed) the following code:
public class CrimeListFragment extends Fragment {
private RecyclerView mCrimeRecyclerView;
private CrimeAdapter mAdapter;
private static final int IS_REGULAR_CRIME = 0;
private static final int IS_SERIOUS_CRIME = 1;
…
private abstract class CrimeHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder
implements View.OnClickListener {
…
public CrimeHolder(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
super(inflater.inflate(viewType, parent, false));
…
private class RegularCrimeHolder extends CrimeHolder {
public RegularCrimeHolder(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup parent) {
super(inflater, parent, R.layout.list_item_crime);
}
}
private class SeriousCrimeHolder extends CrimeHolder {
private Button mContactPoliceButton;
public SeriousCrimeHolder(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup parent) {
super(inflater, parent, R.layout.list_item_crime_police);
mContactPoliceButton = (Button) itemView.findViewById(R.id.contact_police);
mContactPoliceButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
@Override
public void onClick(View view) {
Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "Call the cops!", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
}
});
}
}
…
private class CrimeAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter {
…
@Override
public CrimeHolder onCreateViewHolder(ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
LayoutInflater layoutInflater = LayoutInflater.from(getActivity());
if (viewType == IS_SERIOUS_CRIME) {
return new SeriousCrimeHolder(layoutInflater, parent);
} else {
return new RegularCrimeHolder(layoutInflater, parent);
}
}
@Override
public int getItemViewType(int position) {
// note: I use constants here and not the layout identifiers
// because that knowledge belongs to the speciffic holder
//
return mCrimes.get(position).isRequiresPolice() ? IS_SERIOUS_CRIME : IS_REGULAR_CRIME;
}
Hi.
My solution is:
