Can't Install HAXM on Mac High Sierra to create emulator

I’m running High Sierra 10.13 on my mac. When I tried to run the sample in the first chapter, I wasn’t able to create an emulator. When I was prompted to install HAXM I got the following error.

Running Intel® HAXM installer
HAXM silent installation only supports macOS from 10.8 to 10.12 !
Done

it seems to be a problem with how modifications to the kernel are handled now in High Sierra. There’s a bandaid solution here that worked for me: https://blog.celogeek.com/201708/672/android-studio-emulator-haxm-on-mac-os-high-serria-10-13/
